What Is Low Porosity Hair?

Porosity basically tells you how good your hair is at getting absorbing water.

If you have low porosity hair, it means your hair is bad at absorbing moisture.

This means that my hair’s cuticle layer is tightly packed and this makes it difficult for water to pass through.

The LOC method of moisturizing natural hair

LOC is an abbreviation for Liquid, Oil, and Cream.

This indicates the order in which a naturalista should apply hair products so as to lock in moisture and keep the mane well moisturized.

If your coils are usually thirsty, you need to incorporate the LOC method of layering products.

creams for low porosity hair

The “L” can be a liquid such as a leave-in conditioner or plain water.

I usually use a leave-in conditioner.

The “O” can be any oil of your choice; but for low porosity hair, I highly recommend light oils which I wrote about here.

The “C” can be a cream or butter.

The “O” and the “C” act as sealants that seal in the moisture from the leave-in conditioner or water.

The LCO method of moisturizing natural hair

The LCO method entails applying products in this order: Liquid (leave-in conditioner or water), Cream and the Oil.

Some people have argued that low porosity hair responds best when you apply products in this particular order.

Since creams have water as one of the ingredients, they are considered to be moisturizing agents, just like the “L”.

Therefore, according to Essence, by using oil as the last step, it creates a barrier by sealing the two layers of moisture (“L” and “C”) into the hair strands.

This way, each layer seals the previous layer.

The Difference Between Creams And Butters

I’ve seen a lot of people using the words ‘cream’ and ‘butter’ interchangeably when talking about the “C” in the LOC and LCO methods of moisturizing natural hair.

Hair butters are thick, and their consistency changes depending on the temperature they’re kept in.

During the colder months, my hair butter gets so hard and I have to heat it up a little so that I can be able to use it on my hair.

In addition, hair butters do not contain any water-based products.

They are made with carrier oils that give your hair nutrients that keep it healthy.

Therefore, butters are designed to seal in moisture.

Creams, on the other hand, may have the same ingredients as butters but they have added water-based ingredients to make the consistency thinner.

They can be kept at any room temperature.

This means that butters are perfect for the LOC method of moisturizing natural hair so that they can seal in moisture from water or leave-in conditioner, as well as the oil.

Likewise, creams would be best suited to be used in the LCO method of moisturizing natural hair.

Since they contain water-based ingredients, they can be used as moisturizing agents after applying a leave-in conditioner.

Oil can then be used as the final product to seal in moisture from the leave-in conditioner and the cream.

Characteristics Of Low Porosity Hair

There are various indicators that will tell you whether you have low porosity hair. They include:

Products sit on your hair

For every hair product you use, your hair doesn’t absorb it, rather it sits on your hair.

For instance, if you apply oil or moisturizers on your hair, after some time, you will realize that the oil or moisturizer is still sitting on your hair instead of it being absorbed.

Perpetually dry hair

One of the biggest signs that you have low porosity hair is that your hair is always dry no matter what you do.

You may have tried different types of moisturizers, tried to moisturize frequently or even deep condition it after every cleansing session but your strands still stay dry.

Poor water absorption

Your hair can’t absorb water easily.

Hence, it takes time before you start your washing routine because it takes a while before your hair absorbs water.

When you are finally able to wash it, it takes time to dry.

Conclusion

Having low porosity hair can be frustrating because everything you do or use seems not to work.

However, you can incorporate the creams listed above for a great moisture boost and easy styling.

You just need to know your hair type, so it would be easier to know how to treat it.
